About This Service

Get more from the solar you already have

If your solar system was installed without battery storage — which was the majority of installations before 2018 — there is a strong financial case for adding storage now. Battery prices have fallen significantly and the gap between export rates (what you receive for surplus) and import rates (what you pay to buy electricity back) is wider than ever.

A typical 10kWh battery retrofit on a 4kW solar system can increase self-consumption from 35% to 75–80%, saving an additional £400–600 per year at current energy prices — on top of what you're already saving with solar.

AC coupling vs DC coupling

AC-coupled batteries connect to your home's AC supply, independent of the solar inverter. They charge from solar generation that would otherwise be exported, and they can also charge from the grid. AC coupling works with almost any existing solar inverter and is the standard approach for retrofits. DC-coupled batteries connect directly to the solar panels' DC circuit, bypassing the existing inverter — this is more efficient but requires either replacing the existing inverter or a hybrid inverter with DC input capability. We'll assess your existing system and advise which approach is optimal.

Optimising your existing inverter

Some existing inverters — particularly SolarEdge, SMA and Fronius units — have built-in battery readiness features that can be unlocked with a retrofit. In these cases, a compatible battery can integrate with your existing monitoring app and provide a more seamless experience. We'll identify whether your inverter supports this before recommending a standalone AC-coupled system.

We retrofit to systems we haven't installed

We regularly retrofit battery storage to systems installed by other companies — including firms that are no longer trading. We work from your existing installation certificate and documentation, and update your registration on completion of the retrofit. If documentation is missing or incomplete, we'll advise on the most appropriate route to certification.

Export limitation and DNO requirements

Adding battery storage to an existing solar system may require notification to your DNO — particularly if total generation capacity (solar + battery export) could exceed the original G98/G99 notification threshold. We handle all DNO correspondence as part of the retrofit installation.

Works with any existing inverter

AC-coupled retrofits are inverter-agnostic. We assess DC-coupling options where the existing inverter supports it.

Fox ESS, SolaX & SolarEdge

Three brands covering different retrofit scenarios and budgets. All with 10-year warranties and UK technical support.

Retrofit certification

Full certification for the battery addition. Your combined solar + battery system is fully certified.

Octopus Agile compatible

Programmed for time-of-use tariffs. Charge from cheap overnight rate, discharge during peak — set up on commissioning.

Self-consumption modelling

We model your actual generation and consumption data to confirm the battery size that will give you the best return.

What's Included

Every battery retrofit includes

Existing system assessment

Review of your solar installation, inverter compatibility, generation data and consumption profile. AC or DC coupling recommendation with explanation.

Battery system supply

SolaX, SolarEdge or Solis — selected for compatibility and sized to your consumption. Fully warranted for 10 years.

Installation & integration

Wall-mounting, wiring, protection devices, and integration with your existing solar system — AC or DC coupled as appropriate.

Commissioning & programming

Time-of-use tariff setup. Solar-priority charging configured. App monitoring set up and verified against actual data on commissioning.

DNO notification

G98 or G99 amendment submitted to your DNO. All documentation updated to reflect the combined installation.

Retrofit certificate

Battery retrofit fully certified. Updated certificate issued and lodged. Suitable for future incentive applications.

Common Questions

Battery retrofit FAQs

Will a battery retrofit work with my existing inverter?
+
In most cases, yes. An AC-coupled battery (the most common retrofit approach) is independent of your existing solar inverter — it connects to your home's AC supply and works with any existing setup. For DC-coupled options, compatibility depends on your inverter brand and model. We'll confirm compatibility before recommending any specific solution.
My solar was installed in 2012 — is it too old to add battery?
+
Age of the solar installation is not the main factor — condition of the existing wiring, inverter health, and installation documentation are what matter. We've successfully retrofitted batteries to systems over 12 years old. If the solar system is still generating well and the wiring is in good condition, a battery retrofit is a straightforward addition.
What's the difference between AC coupling and DC coupling?
+
AC coupling uses a separate battery inverter/charger that connects to your home's AC supply. It's simpler, works with any existing solar setup, and allows grid charging. DC coupling connects the battery directly to the solar panels' DC circuit — it's more efficient (avoids a double conversion loss) but requires either replacing your inverter with a hybrid unit or a purpose-built DC-coupled battery inverter. We'll advise which makes more sense for your specific setup.
Does adding a battery affect my FIT or SEG payments?
+
FIT generation payments are based on your generation meter reading, not your export — they are unaffected by adding battery storage. SEG (export) payments are based on what you actually export to the grid. A battery reduces your exports (because you store energy that you'd previously export), so your SEG income will decrease — but this is more than offset by the saving on imported electricity. Net financial benefit is significantly positive in all reasonable scenarios.
How long does a retrofit installation take?
+
A standard AC-coupled battery retrofit typically takes half a day to a full day. DC-coupled retrofits involving inverter replacement may take a full day. The installation does not require roof access in most cases — work is carried out at the battery location (typically indoors) and at the consumer unit.
Do I need to notify anyone when adding a battery?
+
Battery storage systems require G98 (systems up to 16A per phase) or G99 (larger systems) notification to your Distribution Network Operator. If your solar system was originally notified under G98 and the combined solar + battery export capability remains within threshold, a simple amendment is required. We handle all DNO notifications as part of the retrofit installation.
