About This Service

Use more of what you generate

A solar panel system without battery storage typically achieves 30–40% self-consumption — meaning most of what you generate is exported at a fraction of what you'd pay to import it back. A correctly sized battery brings self-consumption to 70–85%, dramatically improving your return on investment.

We supply and install Tesla Powerwall, Fox ESS, SolaX and SolarEdge battery systems — all established brands with strong UK technical support, app-based monitoring and firmware that is actively maintained. We do not install battery systems we can't fully support post-installation.

Sizing matters more than brand

The most common mistake in battery storage is under-sizing. A 5kWh battery on a 6kW solar system will fill by midday on a summer day and export the rest anyway. We review your generation data and consumption profile before recommending a capacity — and we'll tell you honestly when a larger battery won't pay back the premium.

Octopus Agile and time-of-use tariffs

Modern battery systems can be programmed to charge from the grid during off-peak periods (typically 00:30–04:30 on Octopus Agile) when electricity can cost 5–7p/kWh, then discharge during peak periods at 25–35p/kWh. This "grid arbitrage" function is included in the setup and commissioning of every system we install.

New install or retrofit?

We install battery storage alongside new solar systems and as retrofits to existing solar installations — including systems originally installed by other companies. Retrofit compatibility depends on your existing inverter; we'll advise during the survey whether an AC-coupled or DC-coupled battery is the right solution.

Certification for retrofits

Battery retrofits to existing professionally installed solar systems are themselves eligible for installation certification. We handle the paperwork and lodge the certificate on your behalf.

Battery storage FAQs

Do I need solar panels to have a battery?

No. A standalone battery (sometimes called a grid battery) can be charged entirely from the grid during cheap overnight tariff periods and discharged during peak-price hours. This is increasingly popular with Octopus Agile customers. However, the economics are typically more favourable when paired with solar generation.
Can a battery power my home during a power cut?

Some battery systems include an Emergency Power Supply (EPS) function that automatically disconnects from the grid and powers a designated circuit during a power cut. Not all batteries support this — SolaX's AIO range does. We'll advise which models include this feature and what limitations apply (e.g. maximum load, no large motor loads at startup).
Will a battery retrofit void my existing solar warranty?

Not if installed correctly. Adding an AC-coupled battery (connected on the AC side of the existing inverter) has no impact on your solar panels or inverter warranty. DC-coupled retrofits connect to the solar DC circuit and may require inverter manufacturer approval — we'll confirm before specifying any DC-coupled solution.
Where is the battery installed?

Most batteries are installed indoors — utility room, garage, or under-stairs cupboard. They need to be within certain temperature ranges (typically 0–45°C) and away from direct heat sources. We'll advise on the most suitable location during the survey, and all installations include a wall-mounted bracket or floor-standing option as appropriate.
How long does a battery installation take?

Most battery installations are completed in half a day to a full day. More complex retrofits involving consumer unit work or additional circuit protection may require a full day. We'll give you a specific estimate when booking.
What is the expected lifespan of a battery system?

Modern lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries — the chemistry used by SolaX and most premium brands — are warranted for 6,000+ cycles and typically last 15–20 years in domestic use. LFP is more thermally stable and tolerant of regular deep cycling than the NMC chemistry found in some EV batteries and lower-cost storage units.
