FAQs

Why do you install a separate surge protection consumer unit for the EV charger?

EV chargers draw a sustained high current — typically 32A for 7.4kW charging — for several hours at a time. A dedicated IP65-rated consumer unit with RCBO provides circuit protection specifically sized for this load, keeps the EV circuit isolated from the main domestic board, and provides weatherproof protection where the charger is installed externally or in a garage. This is the correct and safest way to install a home EV charger.

Which EV charger should I choose — Fox ESS, Tesla or Zappi?

If you have solar panels and want to maximise free charging from your own generation, Zappi is the leading choice — its solar divert mode charges your car using surplus solar first before drawing from the grid. If you have a Tesla vehicle, the Tesla Wall Connector integrates seamlessly and delivers the best experience. If you have or plan to install Fox ESS solar or battery, the Fox ESS charger integrates within the same app ecosystem. We advise on the right choice for your setup during the survey.

Is there any EV charger grant available for homeowners?

The OZEV Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) closed to homeowners in single-unit properties in April 2022. Grants remain available for flat owners, renters and businesses. The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) provides up to £350 per socket for eligible businesses. We advise on current grant availability during every commercial EV charger enquiry.

How long does an EV charger installation take?

A standard home EV charger installation takes approximately two to three hours. This includes fitting the charger, running and securing the cable, installing the surge protection consumer unit and RCBO, carrying out all required electrical testing and commissioning the app and smart charging features. You receive your Part P certificate and all documentation on the day.

Can I charge any electric vehicle with these chargers?

Yes. All three chargers we install — Fox ESS, Tesla Wall Connector and Zappi — use a Type 2 connector, which is the UK and European standard for AC charging. All electric vehicles sold in the UK use Type 2 for AC home charging. The Tesla Wall Connector also natively supports Tesla vehicles via the same connector.
